Use & Maintenance

To use the filter simply fill with water and let nature do its work.

  • Fill to the top with cool or cold water. Never use hot water, which will ruin the filter cartridge.

  • To condition a new filter: 1) fill and discard the water once, 2) let sit overnight, and then 3) fill and discard the water again.  If any black sediment appears in the water, this is just charcoal and will disappear after conditioning.

  • If the filter is not used for a week, flush through one fill of water.

  • Because it's a gravity filter the flow rate is much faster when the water is filled to the top. It's normal for filtering to slow down and then stop once the water level drops towards the bottom couple inches. If you're in a hurry to get water, you can keep topping off the water level. The system will overflow if too full.

Assembly

  • Insert the spigot with the rubber washers sandwiching the glass and the metal washers on the outsides of the rubber washers. Tighten the nut just so it's secure, using a wrench. Don not over-tighten. Rinse the spigot thoroughly.

  • Insert the filter cylinder with the washer against the base of the cylinder. Tighten the wingnut just enough that the washer seals against the glass. Do not over-tighten.

Maintenance

  • Clean the filter cartridge seasonally for best results:

    • Unscrew the filter wing-nut and remove the filter cartridge, retaining the washer to be re-installed.

    • Using a green scrub pad (or the coarse side of a sponge) lightly scrub the cartridge under cold water for 30 seconds. You just need to exfoliate the outer layer. This will remove clogs and return the filter to its optimum speed. It will also look bright and new! Do not use hot water or scrub too hard, which may damage the filter.

    • While the filter is out, you may want to wash the glass. Use warm water and soap. Hot water can cause the glass to crack.

    • When re-installing the cartridge, the wing-nut should be securely hand tightened so the washer forms a seal.

  • Over time the filter may slow down. You can purge it to restore faster filtration. Simply invert the top chamber in the sink so that the white filter element is upside down. Use a syringe to push water through the threaded end of the filter element, which will flush out clogs.  Repeat 10 times. Then plunge and suck air back and forth with the empty syringe 10 times. If you don't have a syringe, you can remove the filter element and use your mouth to blow and suck water through it.

  • Avoid prolonged direct sunlight. Algae may start to form on the glass if the system is exposed to prolonged sunlight.
